CAREER VISION · POSSIBILITIES FOUND IN THE FIELD

Your first job may be small,
but your future doesn't have to be.

People I met over 20-some years of publishing a beauty industry trade magazine.
Their stories point the same way: knowledge and skills from the field are the start of bigger opportunities.

Discover reasons to choose this industry through stories from the field. Incomes in these stories are individual experiences; market pay for each occupation is shown separately in Career Roadmap.

01 / AN INDUSTRY WE HADN'T NOTICED

Even in a village without electricity,
there was beauty.

A nameless rural village in Cambodia. Even there, where electricity had not yet arrived, the shelves of the beauty supply shop were full of global-brand products. Beauty had reached far deeper into people's daily lives than we imagine.

At a wig factory, it wasn't only people making products — designers, market researchers and staff working with buyers were there too. At the headquarters of a large hair-care company, many people were applying very different kinds of expertise.

A store can be the first door into this enormous industry.
02 / A LEADER WHO STARTED IN THE FIELD

From store associate
to vice president of a global company.

A friend who never finished beauty school and started out working at a beauty supply rose to vice president at global company L. When I gave her the Retail Beauty Consultant textbook, she said, half joking and half serious:

“If I'd had a textbook like this
when I first entered this industry,

I'd have reached this position ten years sooner.”

The ability to understand products, listen to customers and read market change — experience built in the field shines outside the store as well.

03 / MAKE-UP ARTISTRY

Skill brings income —
and the freedom of time.

My friend Nora is a make-up artist at a cosmetics store. She asks customers, “Would you like to try a make-up service?” — and when the service is done, the customer leaves holding a shopping bag full of cosmetics.

$200–$700 Daily service fees and commission · individual case

That is the income I saw her earn. Her manager wanted her to work more, but she chose to work shorter hours and spend more time with her young son.

What her skill gave her was not only money. It was the freedom to choose her life.
04 / WIG SPECIALIST

The skill you learn
can become your own business.

Among the students who learned wigs from me, one told me she had reached $750,000 in sales in a year — a case where learned skill earned customers' trust and grew into her own business.

$750,000 Annual sales reported by a student · not wages or net profit

Not everyone gets the same result. But again and again in the beauty industry, I have witnessed skill create new possibilities.

A deep understanding of wigs, scalp and hair leads beyond product sales to professional consultation and service.
05 / A MESSAGE FOR BUSINESS OWNERS

Your employees' skill
is your store's skill.

The owner of G Beauty Supply in Memphis sponsored his employees' tuition for an expensive wig course instead of attending himself. That store later grew into a strong regional chain.

I can't say one course created that growth. But the values of an owner who invests in employees' growth stayed with me for a long time.

“What if they get trained and leave?”

I understand owners who have been disappointed after investing in employees. Still, there's no need to give up a greater future possibility because of one bad memory.

The good stores I have met had employees who understood customers, explained products and made people want to come back.

If a good location brings customers in,
good employees bring them back.

06 / WHEN PREPARATION MEETS OPPORTUNITY

Prepare a basket
to catch opportunity.

Apples fall from the tree. But not everyone catches them.
Those who have prepared a basket are more likely to seize the opportunity.

Professional vocational education is how you prepare that basket.
CosmoTraining is preparing education that turns field experience into learning, and learning into the next opportunity.

Based on the CosmoBiz publisher's field experience and accounts heard directly from the people involved. Incomes and sales are individual cases and do not guarantee the same results for course graduates.
